How the Round of 32 works
The 2026 tournament expanded from 32 teams to 48, split across 12 groups of four. That meant FIFA needed an extra knockout round to thin the field before the familiar Round of 16. Hence the Round of 32 -- never seen before at a World Cup, inserted between the group stage and the existing knockout bracket.
Three sources of qualifiers fill the 32 slots:
- 12 group winners -- one from each of Groups A through L
- 12 group runners-up -- second place in each group
- 8 best third-place teams -- the top 8 of the 12 third-placed sides, decided by points, goal difference, goals scored, and fair play
The eight third-placed teams are slotted into specific bracket positions based on which groups they emerged from. FIFA pre-published 495 possible combinations so the bracket locks in automatically once the group stage finalizes.

FAQs
When does the Round of 32 start?
Sunday June 28, 2026. The first match is South Africa or another Group A runner-up vs the Group B runner-up at LA Stadium, kicking off at 12 PM PT (3 PM ET / 8 PM UK / 12:30 AM IST next day).
How are the Round of 32 matchups decided?
The bracket positions are pre-set by FIFA. Group winners face third-placed teams or runners-up depending on slot; runners-up face other runners-up. The specific group-vs-group pairings depend on which 8 of the 12 third-placed teams qualify.
Can a third-placed team win the whole World Cup?
Yes. Once knockout football starts every match is level. Portugal won Euro 2016 having finished third in their group. The 2026 format gives third-placed teams the same Round of 32 entry as winners and runners-up.
What if a Round of 32 match is a draw?
30 minutes of extra time (two 15-minute periods). If still tied, penalty shootout with alternating five kicks; sudden death after that.
